Saturday With Joey Dog

Good day fellow foodies. This is The Daily Bone and I'm your diligent doggie commentator
Joseph (Joey dog) Spaniel.

While my incorrigible colleague Chester L. W. Spaniel was busy gawking out the window at the fighting birdies, he missed out on all the other stuff going on here. It's a good thing I've been paying attention! For example, the flowers in the garden now have lots of buds on them.

It's going to be very colorful when all these flowers open!

Ghostwriter loves her irises the best, and has a lot of different varieties. But dummy Chester sometimes tramples them. He's a bad boy when he does that!

I hardly ever stomp around in ghostwriter's garden!

I've been carefully watching the blossoms on my pear tree. Conditions remain favorable for a good bloom and subsequent fruit formation. There are lots of bees around and the weather is warming up.

Pears … yummy!

In other news, yesterday at the nursing home where ghostwriter works, a little doggie named Henry came to visit. His owner just dropped him off and told the staff to let him go wherever he wanted. Poor pup was scared at first. But the staff quickly found residents who were delighted to have Henry sit on their laps! He was a very good little doggie!

On the human news, we saw that a certain comedian was planning to make a movie that poked fun at President Reagan and the fact that he eventually got Alzheimer's Disease. Ghostwriter was pretty mad about this. Alzheimer's is a terrible disease, and it should NEVER be joked about! It's a good thing the comedy guy decided to drop it, or else he would have had to deal with ghostwriter! You don't want to make ghostwriter angry!

Moving on to other news, our feline friends Tibi and Maddie helped with spring cleaning at their house. Don't they look like they're working hard? Or maybe they're hardly working!

I don't think that's how you're supposed to clean the sink, Tibi!

YUMMY ALERT YUMMY ALERT YUMMY ALERT YUMMY ALERT YUMMY ALERT

Dad and ghostwriter went out for lunch today to their favorite Thai restaurant called King and I.

www.thekingandithaicuisine.com

Here's what they ate:

Fried squid tentacles.

Lemon grass soup.

Beef phat prigkhin.

Phat kee moun with shrimp

Coconut custard with sweet rice for two.

Ghostwriter discovered this place years ago, when it was just a tiny hole-in-the-wall. Now it's one of the top Thai restaurants in Rochester.

And now for a funny!

It was a wonderful day for barking! The Double Doggie Homeland Security System was on high alert for all the passers-by! I let Chester do the running around, though.

One more thing. Ghostwriter snapped this picture this morning. She didn't realize what it looked like until she turned it up side down. Wow! It looks like one of our angels, Ginger or Charisma, running with their big cocker spaniel ears flapping. Amazing!

Nap time now!

Oh oh oh oh! What's this I smell?

Left overs! Wow! Left over chicken with Swiss cheese on left-over bread, grilled on the GF grill with left over roasted vegies on the side! Delicious!

No rest for the weary today!

Angry Bird Time

This is The Daily Bone and I'm your doughty doggie reporter Chester L. W. Spaniel.

Wow! It's a riot out there! It seems the National Birdie Mixed Martial Arts Games are in full swing! Ghostwriter wasn't able to catch these fights on her camera, but we found a few videos, like the one below, so you can get the general idea. The other day she saw a couple grackles wrestling over territory across the street. They kept at it for a long time! They were every bit as vicious as the ones in this video!

These bully birds don't just fight with each other. We've seen them harassing robins too. They followed a robin around as she hunted for worms, then tried to steal whatever she caught! There seem to be plenty of worms to go around. I think those grackles were just lazy. Yesterday we saw a robin catch a worm. It looked like a lot of work!

Pulling the worm out of the ground. It looked like a game of tug-o-war!

Yup! It's a good, fat one!

Shlurp! Yum yum yum.

Urp.

The Stodgy Robin Society members aren't such angels either. Ghostwriter has seen them attacking each other, especially right after they're done with their morning symphony! A robin's song usually sounds like this:
"Cheer up, cheerio, cheer up, cheer up, cheer up, cheer up, cheerio, cheer up, cheer up!"
Maybe the translation is this:
"Hey you, listen up, this tree is mine, it's mine, not yours, and I'll beat you up, so there!"

Our hanging birdie feeder closes the feeding ports when heavy birdies like grackles land on it. See these two greedy grackles below? ( I think that's Effluvium Scatterstool, and his arch rival Greasy Dungflinger.) No seeds for them!

But the little sparrows, like Mr. Seedcruncher and his colleagues can eat all they want. By the way, those little tiny birdies, like chipping sparrows and chickadees, are pretty nasty to each other too!

Today when ghostwriter got near a bush where some grackles were nesting, they became all agitated. They circled around overhead, and all their grackle friends came over to swoop and scold.

Meanwhile over at the Sparrows Incorporated Arbor Vitae Convention Center, the house sparrows were practicing their kick-boxing skills.

We haven't seen anything as bad as the two in this video, though.

Usually all this birdie violence stops after nesting season is over. Thank goodness! In the meantime, I've got season tickets to all the action at my drive-through barking window!

Wooooooooohoooooo!

Debby Dove

Hi everybody. This is The Daily Bone and I'm your concerned doggie reporter
Chester L. W. Spaniel.

As I was looking out my drive-through barking window, I got a visitor.

Um … Excuse me.

Hello. My name is Debby Dove.

If you don't mind, I'd like to tell you about a problem.

Well, two problems, actually.

If you would direct your attention over there first …

My husband Douglas would like to eat some seeds from under the feeder. But those grackles won't let him.

They're quite rude, you know.

Now, if you'll look over here, you'll see the second problem.

Do you see him?

That guy's been snarfing seeds off the ground too.

I'll be right out!

All clear Ma'am!

Thank you Chester! (Mourning Dove)

Yeah, thanks Chester! (Chipping Sparrow)

Hey, thanks a lot, man! (Downy Woodpecker)

I'm doing a little dance of thankfulness! (House Finch female)

Good show! (American Robin)

Thank you very much for chasing away the bullies! (Purple Finch)

Great job Chester! (House Sparrow male and House Finch)

Thank you dog dude! (House Finch female)

Our deepest appreciation, sir! (House Finch male)

Any time, birdies! Any time.
